So Tender and True,
Four Short Original Comedies

Images for each of the four plays in So Tender and True

Though unrelated in subject matter, these four comedies capture Theater for Rent's performance style with a healthy mix of scripted and improvisational content. Each of the plays follows its characters as events move farther and farther away from reality and into the realm of the absurd.

The plays being presented in So Tender and True (in performance order) are as follows:

The National Investigator

by Alexander Hancock

When a tabloid's lead story turns out to be true, the staff is on the clock to find a new story to investigate and wind up investigating themselves. At first determined to fabricate a story, things once again begin to fall apart as the reporters lose themselves among fact and fiction.

Phineas Gage

by Alexander Hancock

Based on the true story of Phineas Gage—an early 20th century railroad worker who survived being impaled in the head with a railroad spike to the head and lived through the accident—this play explores how things might have changed for Phineas in life and love as a result of this trauma.

The Bigfoot

by Peter Shipley

A Bigfoot believer drags his skeptical best friend out to the forest where he claims to have once spotted the legendary creature as a child. The two men debate over the existence of the beast until, predictably, they catch a glimpse of something from their hiding place.

Key Party

by Peter Shipley

Two friends admit to fantasizing about each other's wives and decide they can make their dreams come true by throwing a key party (what is a key party?). However, the two of them must contend with their wives—one a domineering prude, the other all-too-eager and determined to do things her own way—both women threatening to ruin what was once a perfect plan.
